A barge board is a complex aerodynamic panel, mounted between the front wheel and the sidepod, that helps manage airflow around the F1 car. The barge boards that developed in the 2000s and 2010s generated highly turbulent air that made it very difficult for following cars to overtake, which resulted in the FIA banning traditional barge boards in 2022 to promote closer racing
